A Nutritious Twist on a Classic Staple.

Indulge in the wholesome goodness of homemade whole wheat pita bread! With just a handful of ingredients and a dash of love, you can create these delightful pockets of flavor that are as nutritious as they are delicious. These whole wheat pita breads are deliciously hearty and perfect for sandwiches, wraps, or dipping into hummus. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.

Ingredients:

  • 150 grams whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 120 milliliters warm water (about 110Ā°F/45Ā°C)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (plus more for greasing)

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir gently to dissolve the yeast and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil.
  4. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix the ingredients until a rough dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  6. Lightly grease a clean bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  7. Once the dough has risen, preheat your oven to 475Ā°F (245Ā°C) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone inside to heat up.
  8. Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
  9. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough ball into a circle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  10. Carefully transfer the rolled-out dough circles onto the preheated baking sheet or pizza stone.
  11. Bake the pita bread for 5-7 minutes, or until they puff up and turn golden brown.
  12. Once baked, remove the pita bread from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  13. Serve the warm pita bread with your favorite dips, spreads, or fillings. Enjoy!
