Healthy Baked Modak
Modak, a sweet dumpling traditionally enjoyed during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in India, is typically steamed and filled with a sweet mixture of coconut and jaggery. This recipe offers a healthier, baked version that maintains the delightful flavors while providing a crispier texture.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup semolina (sooji)
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter), melted
- A pinch of salt
- Water, as needed to form a soft dough
For the Filling:
- 1 cup grated coconut (fresh or frozen)
- 1/2 cup jaggery powder
- 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)
- 1 tablespoon nuts (cashews or almonds, chopped finely, optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a non-stick pan, lightly toast the grated coconut over medium heat until it is just warm. Be careful not to brown it.
- Add the jaggery powder to the pan and mix well until the jaggery melts and combines with the coconut.
- Stir in the cardamom powder, poppy seeds, and nuts (if using). Cook the mixture for another 2-3 minutes until it thickens slightly. Set aside to cool.
- Make the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, semolina, and a pinch of salt. Add melted ghee and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add water and knead into a smooth and pliable dough. Cover and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375Ā°F (190Ā°C). Grease a baking tray lightly with ghee or line it with parchment paper.
- Shape the Modaks:
- Divide the dough into equal-sized balls (about the size of a lime).
- Roll each ball into a thin circle. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle.
- Bring the edges together to form a peak, pinching the dough together delicately to seal it. Ensure the modak is sealed well to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking.
- Bake the Modaks:
- Place the shaped modaks on the prepared baking tray.
- Brush each modak lightly with a bit of melted ghee to help them brown nicely.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until the modaks are golden and crisp.
- Cool and Serve:
- Allow the baked modaks to cool slightly on the tray before transferring them to a serving dish.
- These healthy baked modaks can be served warm or at room temperature as a delightful treat.
Enjoy your healthier version of modaks, perfect for festivities or as a sweet snack any time of the year!
